Esau Society

The Esau Society is an in-reach activity of the church where (traditionally male-but hey, we're open-minded) members gather to enjoy friendship, fellowship, snacks, poker and Monday Night Football.  Esau got its start back in 2003 and has enjoyed having 12 to 18 members each year since then.  Each member donates $40.00 to the society, which is given to the church treasurer to deposit in our account.  Each scheduled week players drawn chips from the banker. A running total is maintained and at the conclusion of the six or seven nights the player with the highest total gets to designate which charity or program receives all of the money.  Each member is encouraged to bring an inexpensive door prize (company hat, coffee mug, etc.) that will be awarded to the player that comes closest to guessing the half time score.  In lieu of door prizes if they are unavailable the winner is awarded $2.00 to be added to his total.  Every member that shows up is also awarded $2.00.  We show up @ 7 p.m., begin playing at 7:30, and finish by the end of the halftime break.

We have used the money raised to build a wheelchair ramp for Camp McDowell at Eppes Hall for Special Session Campers, tables for the Parish Hall, and a sidewalk for the little kids’ playground at church.  Most recently, Esau provided a check for $1,000 that our own Deacon Dave carried with him to Haiti.  The money was used to provide nutritional supplements to some kids that really need the support there.

This year we have 18 members and several others ready to play that just could not free up their Monday nights right now.  We are considering a second session of Esau to run after football season, in some slightly different incarnation.

This is a great way to get to know some of the men in the parish and we would be happy to have you join us.  Contact Charlie Erwin for more information.
